Welcome to the first article!

I thought I’d share a recent interview I did as a bit of an introduction to my work and something which captures the essence of how I like to work my style of photography. This interview was done recently by my good friend Ivan Donlic for Uplift Cycle.

Ivan: Hi Ruskin, congrats on your new website launch!

Ruskin: Thanks bud, it’s been quite the journey.

Ivan: It’s looking great! I guess I’ll jump right in and ask the big questions, How did you start? How did you get into photography? where did it all begin?

Ruskin: Id say it was at school in the darkroom. id spend all my lunch time in there developing film and printing photos, then after school i wanted to go further in photography so i did a diploma in photo imaging, after that i moved to Sydney.

Ivan: I notice the bulk of your black & white work tends to tell a story! Some with natural elements whilst others with more urban feels, all fusing in together with this classic vintage feel to it. I’d imagine the equipment you use ad’s to the vintage part of it but how much of it is on the fly? Do you prepare for your shoots?

Ruskin: Yes i try to make my images timeless, i always prepare for shoots. I’ll make sure the sun is in the right spot. Or if I’m shooting in a studio i’ll test the light until it looks perfect.

Ivan: Awesome! Speaking of equipment, care to elaborate a little more on that and what type of gear you like to use for your work?

Ruskin: I love cameras i use heaps of different cameras for a specific look, but i’ll mainly use a Nikon F3.

Ivan: Nice, another thing I wanted to ask is, you seem to capture these playful elements in your work. How much of it is on the fly and do you prep your models to get these shots? How does it all work?

Ruskin: id say i’m very friendly, so i’d say i make the model fell very comfortable, so i can get a natural expression from the model.

Ivan: I’ve seen some of your lifestyle/sports work, do you have any influences? Any other photographers from who you draw some inspiration? It seems to have a classic and contemporary feel to it.

Ruskin: i love the 60s and 70s fashion photographers like Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn,Patrick Demarchelier.

Ivan: Thanks for your time Ruskin, it’s been great chatting! I look forward to seeing some more of your work.

Ruskin: Pleasure Ivan.
